This is a brief history of the Convo project, updated as the project progresses.

12 March 2005

The convo.co.uk domain is registered. The Convo website goes live with just a holding page.

7 November 2005

A demonstration of the Kuleshov effect in chatterbots goes live, as Experiment 1. It features Ezra the cat.

22 April 2006

The website is relaunched with a new design. Experiment 2 (simple emotion modelling) goes live, featuring Ditto the donkey.

1 May 2006

A new Experiment 1 (name recognition) goes live, featuring Ditto the donkey. The original Experiment 1 (the Kuleshov effect) is relegated to the status of a demonstration.

3 May 2006

Experiment 3 (English or gibberish) goes live, featuring Ditto the donkey.

9 May 2006

Experiment 4 (question recognition) goes live, featuring Ditto the donkey.

30 June 2006

Experiment 1 (name recognition) is translated from Perl to Java but is otherwise unchanged.

14 August 2006

A new and improved version of Experiment 2 (simple emotion modelling) is introduced, together with a full explanation of how it works.

19 October 2006

Experiment 5 (babbling) goes live, featuring Ditto the donkey, together with a full explanation of how it works.

9 May 2007

The description of Experiment 2 is updated with the latest facts and figures.

10 July 2007

An attempt at guessing unrecognised words is added to Experiment 2 (simple emotion modelling), and its description is updated.

16 July 2007

Utterance beginning and end markers are added to Experiment 2 (simple emotion modelling), and its description is updated again.

28 February 2008

The website is transferred to a new hosting platform. Experiment 1, written in Java, stops working due to operating system differences.

31 May 2008

Experiment 1 (name recognition) is translated from Java to Ruby, but is otherwise unchanged. Now working as before.
